Do You Need a Dummy Plug for a Headless Mac Mini?

It turns out that advice is outdated. Today, M1 and later Mac minis create a virtual display automatically when no monitor is attached. No dummy plug required. 

⚠️ But there’s one caveat about resolution that almost none of those guides mention, and it’s the thing that actually trips people up.

What is a dummy plug?

A dummy plug is a small, cheap HDMI or DisplayPort dongle that tricks your Mac into thinking a monitor is connected. Plug it into the display port, and macOS behaves as if a screen is attached: the GPU activates fully, the desktop renders at a normal resolution, and remote desktop tools connect cleanly. 

They cost about $10 on Amazon and have been a staple of headless Mac setups for years.

Intel Macs needed dummy plugs

On Intel Macs, the GPU needed a physical display connected to activate properly. Dummy plugs solved that problem. They were cheap, they worked, and for years they were the standard advice for anyone running a headless Mac.

Apple Silicon changed the game

M1, M2, M3, M4: all of them create a virtual display on their own. The hardware handles it, nothing extra required. If you’re still on an Intel Mac, you may still want one. But if you bought your Mac mini in the last few years, put the dongle away.

The catch: Default resolution is low

Here’s what trips people up. When your Mac mini creates a virtual display with no monitor attached, it defaults to 1920×1080. That’s non-Retina resolution. 

If you’re connecting remotely via VNC or Apple Screen Sharing, text looks fuzzy and the UI looks cheap. It works, but it doesn’t look right.

Most people assume they need a dummy plug to fix this. They don’t. The resolution problem and the dummy plug are two separate things.

The fix: Virtual display support

The real solution is a remote desktop tool with built-in virtual display support. When you connect, it creates a higher-resolution Retina display for your session instead of relying on the Mac’s default low-res one.
