Apple Pencil USB-C: Who should buy it?

apple pencil usb-c

In an unusual move, Apple released a new Apple Pencil that supports USB-C charging without any iPad updates.

Here’s how the Apple Pencil USB-C features compare to the Apple Pencil 2nd Gen:

How do they compare?

*NEW* Apple Pencil (USB-C)

  • βœ… Tilt Sensitivity
  • βœ… Hover on iPad Pro
  • βœ… Magnetic attachment
  • ❌ Pressure sensitivity (❗❗)
  • ❌ Wireless charging & Pairing
  • ❌ Double tap button
  • πŸ’΅ $79 USD

Apple Pencil (2nd gen)

  • βœ… Tilt Sensitivity
  • βœ… Hover on iPad Pro
  • βœ… Magnetic attachment
  • βœ… Pressure sensitivity
  • βœ… Wireless charging & Pairing
  • βœ… Double tap button
  • πŸ’΅ $129 USD

Yup that’s right, the Apple Pencil with USB-C doesn’t support pressure sensitivity!

However, the new Pencil does come in at a much lower price ($79) compared to Apple Pencil – 2nd Gen ($129). Making the new lower price point much more accessible for first-time Apple Pencil owners.

Bottom Line

If you’re a creative, opt instead for the Apple Pencil – 2nd Generation. I can only recommend the Apple Pencil (USB-C) for note-taking since it doesn’t have pressure.

Upgrade your Apple Pencil with Rock Paper Pencil

Use Rock Paper Pencil to enhance your iPad writing/ drawing experience. Rock Paper Pencil combines a ballpoint Apple Pencil tip and a reusable, matte screen protector. Together, they create the most realistic pen-on-paper feeling for iPad.

Plus Rock Paper Pencil works with both the Apple Pencil USB and the Apple Pencil 2nd gen!

  • Ditch the slip: On its own, the iPad’s glass screen is a slippery surface that creates an inconsistent drag on your Apple Pencil.
  • Smoother, more precise strokes: Rock Paper Pencil adds subtle friction between your screen and Apple Pencil tip, giving you more control with each stroke output.
