It’s all based on loss aversion, a psychological phenomenon where a real or potential loss is perceived as more severe than the equivalent gain. So, if you want to hit the gym three times a week but just can’t motivate yourself, StickK could be the psychological hack you’re looking for.
You have to designate a referee to monitor your progress and hold you accountable. Together with the Commitment Contract, this makes StickK one of the more serious apps for tracking habits. However, some of the App Store reviews are less than complimentary, with some users saying customer service is nonexistent.
Another downside is the price, which is on top of whatever you pledge to your Commitment Contracts. The basic version of StickK is free, but if you want to create a group commitment, you need to upgrade.
